Interstate 45 runs from downtown Dallas southeast, to Galveston by way of Houston, in the eastern third of Texas. Along the square of freeways surrounding downtown Dallas, the interchange at the southeast corner is the one having Interstate 45's northern endpoint. At that interchange, the east-west freeway is Interstate 30, and the north-south freeway transitions from US Route 75's southernmost segment into Interstate 45's northernmost segment. Interstate 35E lies just to the west. Interstate 45 heads south-southeast overall, out of Dallas to Houston, where it crosses Interstate 10. Interstate 45 isn't done yet when it reaches Houston, though, as it continues southeast toward the ocean. Its last hurrah is a bridge over the salty waters of the Gulf of Mexico, to its southern terminus on Galveston Island. The final interchange leads to Texas Spur Route 342, and at that point, the highway becomes Texas State Highway 87.
My photo of an Interstate 45 route marker comes from its interchange with Texas State Route 34 in Ennis, Texas. The aperture looks southeast down an entrance ramp to Interstate 45. The signage depicted faces traffic coming from the southeast-bound offramp. This photo was taken as part of the first trip to the Gulf Coast in October 2014. Back to the nationwide main page.
