^Ohio Route 104 heads north alongside US Route 23 on the north side of Waverly, March 2021.
Ohio State Route 104 runs south out of Columbus to the Ohio River, but it also includes an east-west expressway in the Columbus area. Looking at the north-south portion first, we'll mention that the southern end of Ohio Route 104 is in Portsmouth, at US Route 23. Ohio Route 104's role in southern Ohio is to provide what is essentially a western alternate to US Route 23. The first piece of Ohio Route 104 is concurrent with Ohio Route 73. The two routes exit Portsmouth toward the west, and they soon curl northward out of town. Ohio Route 73 departs toward the west, leaving Ohio Route 104 to continue northward along the west side of the Scioto River. US Route 23 is running northward along the east side of the river, in the meantime. This continues until Piketon, where US Route 23 crosses to the west side of the river. Just north of Piketon, Ohio Route 104 joins US Route 23 north in Waverly. As the two routes reach Chillicothe, however, they split up into the previous arrangement; Ohio Route 104 follows the west side of the Scioto River, and US Route 23 continues up the east side. As US Route 23 serves Circleville, Ohio Route 104 stays to the west, largely bypassing the town. Then, Ohio Route 104 reaches the Columbus area. As it reaches Frank Road, right alongside that road's interchange with Interstate 71, Ohio Route 104 undergoes a major shift onto an easterly freeway. That freeway takes Ohio Route 104 across the south side of Columbus. The freeway stretches about six miles east to US Route 33. The interchange at US Route 33 on the southeast side of Columbus is where Ohio Route 104 terminates.
My photo of Ohio State Route 104 comes from the north side of Waverly, where it is duplexed with US Route 23. The pair of trailblazers shown reminds northbound travelers that the road carries US Route 23 and Ohio Route 104. These particular signs face a local unnumbered road. This photo was taken in March 2021, as the grand tour of the southeastern quarter of Ohio was just getting started. Back to Ohio Routes 100-199. Back to the Ohio main page. Back to the home page.
