US Route 283 is a north-south highway through southern Nebraska, western Kansas, western Oklahoma, and portions of Texas. The southern end of US Route 283 is in Brady, Texas, sort of in the middle of the state, at US Routes 87, 377, and 190. From there, US Route 283 heads northward, steadfast in sticking to rural areas and small towns only. It passes east of Abilene and west of Wichita Falls, before entering the western edge of Oklahoma's main section (precluding the panhandle). Further ahead, US Route 283 bisects the western half of Kansas, meaning that one-quarter of Kansas will lie west of US Route 283. Dodge City is the largest town in Kansas that US Route 283 reaches. It meets Interstate 70 at Wakeeney, and it meets US Route 36 at Norton. US Route 283 only makes it less than one-third of the way across Nebraska before it ends at US Route 30 in Lexington, Nebraska, near the Interstate 80 corridor.
My photo of US Route 283 comes from a junction just outside of Seymour, Texas, lying on the northeast side of town. At this junction, US Routes 183 and 283 come from the north to join US Routes 82 and 277 westward into Seymour. The aperture points west at signage for westbound travelers, explaining how all of this happens. This photo was taken in October 2024 during the Southwest trip to New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma.
