US Route 276 runs across the Blue Ridge Mountains, from Greenville, South Carolina, northwest to a point in far western North Carolina, along Interstate 40. US Route 276 is one of the shorter US highways, but it has some notable uses. It provides direct access to recreational and scenic spots within the Pisgah National Forest; in fact, many picnic areas and trailheads are right along this road! It is a highly-trafficked route in the Greenville, South Carolina area, especially because its southern end is a forward continuation of Interstate 385. I really enjoyed myself as I drove this highway from end to end. The mountain scenes are gorgeous as seen from this road, but don't expect to go fast; the numerous sharp turns and switchbacks are for seasoned mountain travelers only.
My photo of US Route 276 comes from its western junction with US Route 19, near Maggie Valley, North Carolina. This is the northwesternmost junction with another US highway found along US Route 276; those starting out on US Route 276 from the northern end at Interstate 40 will encounter this junction before any other junction with a US highway. This photo looks easterly. US Route 19 is jogging easterly at this point, and US Route 276 comes from the north to join US Route 19 easterly into the Waynesville area. This photo was taken in April 2024, as part of the trip to the Delmarva and the Carolinas.
