Interstate 83 is a north-south freeway between Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland. It is one of the shorter Interstates, running for only seventy-eight miles (37 in Maryland, plus 51 in Pennsylvania). The northern end is at Interstate 81 on the northeast side of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. A rough schematic of the Interstate system would probably show Interstate 81 heading south from the eastern shores of Lake Ontario south to the Harrisburg area, thence bending southwesterly for the rest of its length, to eastern Tennessee. As Interstate 78 is a northeastern continuation of the diagonal part of Interstate 81, Interstate 83 is a southern continuation of the part of Interstate 81 heading straight southward from Canada. Interstate 83 starts by zigzagging through the middle of Harrisburg, turning from southward to westward to southward again. Next, it bypasses the east side of York, Pennsylvania. Interstate 83 meets Interstate 695 as it reaches the Baltimore area, but it's not done yet. It jogs westerly along Interstate 695 for a short distance before occupying the Jones Falls Expressway south into downtown Baltimore. Interstate 83 ends at Fayette Street in downtown Baltimore, Maryland.
My photo of Interstate 83 signage hails from an interchange with 13th Street, a local street in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This interchange is labeled as Exit 44A. Interstate 83 actually runs east-west in this area; this is part of that zigzag toward the west, interrupting the overall southward motion of travelers on Interstate 83. The aperture is actually looking toward the north, at this pair of guide markers pointing out the onramps to Interstate 83. I was standing at the location of the origin of the northbound (eastbound) onramp. This photo was taken in April 2024, during my trip to Pennsylvania, the Delmarva, and the Carolinas.
