US Route 166 runs east-west across the southern edge of Kansas's eastern half. In south-central Kansas, the town of South Haven serves as the site where US Route 166 begins heading toward the east. Beginning at US Route 81, US Route 166 heads east across portions of southernmost Kansas. US Route 166 passes through Arkansas City, Coffeyville, and a lot of rural areas, until it reaches Baxter Springs. At Baxter Springs, US Route 166 joins US Route 400 east, and both roads run concurrently until they both end, just beyond the Missouri state line. US Route 166 and US Route 400 both end at Exit 1 along Interstate 44 near Joplin, Missouri.
My photo for US Route 166, giving the shield image that appears on the menu page and at the top of this page, comes from the interchange where it splits from US Route 400 near Baxter Springs. This photo looks west at the first trailblazer for westbound US Route 166 that is separate from US Route 400. The aperture looks west at the westbound trailblazer, and toward downtown Baxter Springs. This photo was taken on the way back from New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma, in October 2024.
