US Route 183 is a long north-south highway across the Great Plains. It begins in central South Dakota, and pierces through the middle of Nebraska, the middle of Kansas, and western Oklahoma, before serving a great deal of Texas. US Route 183 is perhaps best known in the Austin area, where it cuts from northwest to southeast across that city as a major highway. US Route 183 has its northern end at Interstate 90 at Presho, South Dakota, southeast of Pierre. US Route 183 continues south through rural areas and small towns in central Nebraska and central Kansas. US Route 183 continues through western Oklahoma and north-central Texas. The southeasterly behavior begins in Brownwood, Texas, carrying through Austin to ends in Refugio, Texas, where one can find the southern terminus of the whole route at US Route 77. Refugio is a bit northeast of Corpus Christi, near the Gulf Coast.
My photo of US Route 183 comes from the central junction within the town of Seymour, Texas. In Seymour, US Route 183, US Route 283, and US Route 277 bypass around the east side of town, but a business route for US Route 183 still runs north-south through the center of town, as an alternate alignment. The picture here looks west at a guide marker showing that the business route for US Route 183 runs north-south here. There are other guide markers at this intersection for westbound traffic talking about US Routes 82, 277, and 283, which are all also present at this intersection. This photo was taken in October 2024 during the Southwest trip to New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma.
